Addon Domains: Brief Explanation and Instructions
Solution

What are addon domains?

At HostPapa, we allow you to host an unlimited number of websites with your single account. The domain name you sign up with is free and considered your primary domain name.

You may also host other domain names, with their own standalone websites and email addresses. These are called “addon domains,” and they appear completely unique to visitors and search engines alike – but are actually hosted by your single account.

It's free to add more domains to your account, although you first have to register them, either through us or another registrar.

If you would like HostPapa to register the domain for you:

  1. Please submit a support ticket. Do this through http://hostpapasupport.com or by logging into your cPanel and clicking on “Submit a support request” under the “Advanced” heading.

  2. Please include your primary domain name on the ticket and request more information.

  3. We'll send you an order form with pricing and all the other information you'll need.

  4. Note: if you register an addon domain through HostPapa, we will set the DNS settings to our server by default.

If you would like to register the domain at a registrar other than HostPapa:

  1. Your DNS settings (also called nameserver settings) must be adjusted to point to our servers.

  2. Refer to your “Login Information” email from HostPapa for these settings and instructions.

  3. If you have questions on how to set up DNS settings on domains registered outside of HostPapa, please contact your current registrar.

Once you have registered your domains, you may “bring in” the addon domains to your hosting account. Go to cPanel > Domains > Addon Domains

For more information, please read our article outlining how to set up an addon domain:

There is also a video that shows you how to do this:

If you are transferring your website from another provider, you may want to follow our guidelines on how to transfer addon domains with the minimum amount of downtime:

Here are some additional tips about how your addon domains appear and are stored, using the example of a primary domain called fish.com and an addon domain (or subdomain) called cat.com:

The HTML contents of a subdomain go into a subfolder of the /public_html/ folder in your account.

Using the example above, cPanel creates a directory called /public_html/cat/ for the addon domain cat.com, which will be visible via your browser as cat.com.

You can create POP mail accounts with both fish.com and cat.com (so you can have email accounts such as yourname@fish.com and yourname@cat.com, or even yourname@fish.com and yourothername@cat.com).

For more information, read our article about creating POP email accounts:

http://hostpapasupport.com/tutorials/demos/cpanel-x3-voice/cpanel-x3-popemail.html

Accessing FTP for cat.com can be done using FTP username cat@fish.com.

Note: Please ensure that you first update the nameservers for your addon domain at your registrar with the same nameservers as for your main domain (see your HostPapa welcome email for further information on how to do this).
