Before you create a new blog post in WordPress it is important to understand what the difference between Pages and Posts is.
- Think of pages as being for static content that won’t change regularly like a Contact or About page
- Think of Posts as news updates that get added regularly
Click on Posts > Add New:
- Enter your post title in the upper field
- Enter your post body content in the main post editing box below it
A Featured Image is used by some theme to display an image at the top of the page. To add a Featured Image in the sidebar click on Set Featured Image.
Adding tags provides an easy way to group related posts together and to quickly tell readers what a post is about. Tags also make it easier for people to find your content. Tags are different to categories in that they are more specific. To add a tag simply type it into the text area. You can add more than one tag at a time by separating them by commas. You can also choose from the most used tags on your blog by clicking Choose from the most used tags.
Like tags, categories provide an easy way to group related posts together and to quickly tell readers what a post is about. Categories are much broader than tags. You can add a category to a post by ticking it or add a new category by clicking Add New Category.
Publishing your post
Status refers to the publish status: Published, Draft or Pending Review. If you wish to change the status then click on the Edit status button in the sidebar and select your desired status.
By changing the visibility you decide who can see your page. The three options are:
- Public – anyone can see
- Private – only you can see
- Password Protected – anyone who knows the password can see
The default visibility is public. To change the visibility click on Edit visibility in the side menu and select your desired visibility.
You can decide when you want your page published. Enter a date in the future or you can even set it to a date in the past.
To set the publish date click on Edit date in the sidebar.
When you are finished editing your page click Publish.
When you are ready, click Publish.
