How to set up an addon domain

The addon domain function in cPanel allows you to host additional domains on your HostPapa account. Each addon domain will appear to be a separate website to your visitors. In this article, we’ll show you how to set up an addon domain.

How to purchase a domain

To host an additional domain on your HostPapa account, you need to purchase the domain. You can do this through your HostPapa dashboard.

  1. Log in to your HostPapa dashboard.
  2. Click on My Domains.
  3. Click on Register New Domain.
  4. Complete the secure form.
  5. Click Continue.

IMPORTANT: When setting up an addon domain where HostPapa is NOT your domain’s registrar, you must change the DNS settings for that domain to HostPapa’s DNS servers first. This allows the domain to propagate (typically 12-24 hours) before adding the domain in your cPanel. Please see your Login Information email for the DNS servers to use.

We have numerous tutorial videos about updating DNS entries through specific domain registration companies (registrars).

How to set up an addon domain

  1. Log in to your HostPapa dashboard.
  2. Click on My cPanel and the domain name link (if you have more than one domain).
  3. From the Domains section, click on Addon Domains.
  4. Enter the domain name you would like to add – you don’t need to enter “www” before the domain.
  5. You can either hit the Tab key twice or click the Password field to auto-populate the Subdomain/FTP Username and Document Root fields.
  6. Enter a password for the addon domain. Note: This is a new password, not your cPanel password.
  7. Click Add Domain.

NOTE: You don’t need the three redirection settings unless you want your addon domain to point somewhere else, for example, to another site or server.

The web files for an addon domain are located in a subfolder in your public_html folder, so you must upload your site to that folder to display your addon domain.

Email accounts for the addon domain can also be set up under the mail settings in cPanel. From the Mail section, click on Email Accounts and set up your email address. You will be able to choose the addon domain from a pull-down menu in the setup screen.
